Meet the AI tool turning tedious choroid measurements into fast, reproducible, research-ready data.
The choroid just got a high-tech sidekick. Heidelberg Engineering (Heidelberg, Germany) is teaming up with NetraMind Innovations (Pennsylvania, USA) to bring NMI-ChoroidAI, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered choroidal analysis tool, to the Heidelberg AppWay marketplace.
The new app uses machine learning to automatically process SPECTRALIS OCT volume data, giving eye care professionals detailed measurements of choroidal thickness, volume and Choroidal Vascularity Index (CVI) in ETDRS grid format, all without the manual slog.

“Accurate assessment of the choroid is essential in understanding and managing retinal diseases such as AMD, CSCR and pathological myopia. Manual segmentation is often time-consuming and subjective,” said Dr. Jay Chhablani (USA), professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh and director of the Choroidal Analysis and Research Lab at UPMC Eye Center, in a news release. “With NMI-ChoroidAI, clinicians and researchers gain objective, reproducible and fully automated analyses in a fraction of the time, enhancing both patient care and scientific discovery.”

Developed by NetraMind Innovations, whose team brings over 50 years of combined expertise in ophthalmic imaging and computational analysis, NMI-ChoroidAI tackles the challenges of choroid assessment with AI-accelerated segmentation, clinician oversight, CVI heat mapping, visualization tools and seamless workflow compatibility with HEYEX 2.
“At NetraMind Innovations, our mission is to push the boundaries of innovation in healthcare through advanced analytics,” added Dr. Chhablani. “With NMI-ChoroidAI on the Heidelberg AppWay platform, ophthalmologists and researchers can now unlock deeper insights into the choroid, helping to improve diagnostic confidence, streamline workflow and accelerate research into ocular diseases.”

Rowan Emslie, product manager of Clinical Workflow at Heidelberg Engineering, stated, “We are excited to welcome NMI-ChoroidAI from NetraMind Innovations to the Heidelberg AppWay marketplace. This partnership reflects our vision of combining innovative AI applications with the trusted imaging and workflow solutions of SPECTRALIS and HEYEX 2, delivering powerful insights that make a meaningful difference in clinical practice and research.”
The companies note that NMI-ChoroidAI is intended solely as an assistive tool and is currently not CE-marked or FDA-cleared for clinical use.
Eye care professionals can catch NMI-ChoroidAI in action at the AAO Annual Meeting in Orlando from October 17 to 20, 2025, at the Heidelberg Engineering booth #3149.
